Buffing

Yes, we spent days buffing the Perfection applied to John and Elizabeth DeLanoy's 1957 Bell Boy 16 Express. Started with fairly abrasive rubbing compound and worked into finer grits like 3M Finesette, then to glazing compounds and wax.

Buffing Interlux Perfection - Mirka Discs

Sort of depends on the paint. Some manufactures will state whether the paint is buffable or not. For example, AwlGrip is not, but AwlCraft is. Both polyurethanes.

A cabinet maker stopped by the shop yesterday and gave me some Mirka Abaralon discs. Mirka, as he expained is a European company offering products similar to the abrasives from 3M. Mirka is new to me!

The Abralon discs are foam backed discs with a hook (loop) backing. Come in a variety of grits. The three he gave me are 500, 1000 and 2000 grit.

Suggested I use them to fix runs and sags and a dull spot on my new urethane hull paint job. They also make 4000 grit that he said I should get for the final polish.

I'll let you know how they work.....

Mirka Abralon Discs

I tried the Mirka Abralon discs yesterday.

The two part urethane paint is so hard, the discs hardly had any effect at all. I spent about 15 minutes with an air driven polisher and the 500 grit Abralon in a 12" X 12" area. Hardly had any effect at all. I then went to 3M 1200 and 1500 wet or dry and then the 500 grit Abralon disc worked well.

Then went to 1000 and then 2000 disc. Final poish with 3M Perfect It on a 8 inch waffle foam polishing disc. Looks pretty dang good!

Recommend the Mirka Abralon discs.

Interlux said that it should not be buffed because the gloss part of the paint goes to the surface. I have read in various forums that it was successfully buffed. I have a very good gloss sheen and maybe I should just leave well enough alone? Here and there, there is just a little stipple in the paint. I thought I might try 3M Perfect- it. It polished the Pettit one part well. What to do??

I'd leave it alone for now, until or unless you get scratches you want to buff out.

We buffed the Bell Boy 16 to get rid of some areas of minor orange peel. It worked fine, but took forever...so I'd avoid the task as long as possible if you're basically happy with the results.
