Hello everyone. This is my first boat and can't wait to get on the water. It's an early 70's Bellboy 21' inboard with a straight 6. In the process of getting it ready for this weekend I hope. I will add pictures soon of the project. Get to start the engine tonight and see if everything is working.
Luckily, my neighbor, Benjamin, the owner of Hewitt custom boats, restores boats and he is helping me. The first trick he taught me, which seem to be a large topic of discussion, removing carpet GLUE! From my reasearch, I found someone that had good luck with a chemical MEK. It was working good, but taking a long time and you have to deal with the smell and the sticky mess it was leaving behind. He said to use a wire wheel on an angle grinder like this one http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardw...atalogId=10053. I tried a wire wheel like this one http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053 and did not work very well at all. Just seemed to burn the glue.
Then I tried this onehttp://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053 All I can say is HOLY COW. I was done with the whole boat in 30 minutes flat. It was taking the glue off as fast as I could move the grinder. You just have to be careful not to stay in one place too long or it will burn the fiberglass. If you keep it moving there is no issue. Was even able to get in small places and up the side of the boat.
Now, it doesn't take it completely off, but you don't need to take it down to bare resin. If it is still stuck after this operation, it has good adhesion and the new coat of glue will stick right to it.
