  • Oops I did it again ...

... and brought another one home. Thanks to Marty's excess inventory and my longtime desire for a little wooden runabout, this one followed me home and took up residence in the shop.

She's a little dirty and a little damp, but quite sound with the exception (so far) of some rot in the keel just before it rises into the stem. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the transom, where a future drain plug will be installed, and the wood was dry and sound. Same for the scuppers I drilled in the frames.

The ply hull and deck have been glassed, the glass on the hull appears to be well bonded and the ply is sound. The deck glass is cracked and delaminating, but that's okay since the plan is to remove the deck and reconfigure the boat as a single cockpit.

I have a '57 35 hp Johnson that should provide plenty of power for this little lightweight thing. The boat's controls and steering are ready to attach to the engine, obviously it was last powered by a Johnson or Evinrude.

Tim, Cool little boat. Let me know if you would like any help with it or any of the other boats in your sizeable fleet. I am still working on mine whenever I get a wild hair. The hatch cover and windshield frame are ready for the last coat of paint and then I can install both probably this week. I hope to have the windshield plexy put in soon. I still have a few areas on the cuddy that I should retouch (sages) and then I can put all the hardware back on. I hope to have everything done by opening day.

Tim- Perhaps we need a photo of the Evinrude hanging on the transom to wrap our minds around your seeming insanity.:shocked3:

                OK Gregs:

Mr James - Have you noticed you don't have your shop vac? I found a place to order the light sockets for our bow lights so I should have those wired up before too long.

Mr Lamb - I was going to hang my little Johnson over the stern and take a photo but the hoist is occupied with a Homelite waiting for me to build another stand and that 35 hp is just heavy enough that I can't get enthused about carrying it to the other side of the shop and lifting it onto the boat. I've moved it by hand a few times now and I promised myself the last time was the last time.

                  better looking in person...

Checked out Tim's new mini-speedster this weekend. It is smaller (and cooler) than it appears in the photos, if he can just avoid turning it into a museum piece we may see it this coming season.

                    Just figuring it out ...

I'm working on locating the cockpit in the right place, I want to make sure that if I have a buddy with me he can reach around and take care of the Johnson while underway.

Don't want to have to try and steer while adjusting the high speed mixture, ya know.

I know what you're thinking, Gordon. You're thinking that if I hung a Merc on it then I wouldn't have to worry about adjusting the high speed jet. I'm sure that's what you were thinking.

You're right, but I just love the way these old Johnsons look with the Holiday Bronze and white paint. It's just perfect for this little boat. And the steering and controls are ready to hook up to it.

Considering the boat and motor were both free, it's a real budget package.

Oh, but this one is for Dad! McSon gets an Express Cruiser with a Homelite on the back. This one is my toy. I figure I'll go a little faster in it than he would. Less wind resistance from the hair, you know. :BigWink1:

If Tim followed my advice and put an inboard jet in that sucker, he wouldn't need a reach around buddy to fiddle with his old Johnson.
