  • 1959 Homebuilt Playboy restoration

I've been restoring this 14' wood/fiberglass Playboy style boat since spring 2010. work time so far is about 1.5 years. This is my first boat and project of anything this size so I am very much a first timer. The resto is nearing completion with steering cable and control installation as well as all the chrome stuff and rubrail.

The boat was drawn up in his taxi while on breaks in Burnaby, BC. He told me that he saw one once and said, "I think I can build that". So he did lol. It's my intention to phone him up where he resides in Summerland, BC and take him for a ride in it. He is now 90.

Powering it initially will be a '59 Mercury Mark 35a then later a '59 Mark 58a when I get it restored.

    More pictures to come.

Not sure what to post. I have so many pictures of the entire process. How about..... these?:email1:

Cut out some red acrylic for under the base of the steering unit. The old stuff was cracked and the red was too bright of a shade.

It's launched, handles great and the Mercury Mk35a runs like a top! I also stopped by to show 90 year old man who originally drew the plans and built this boat in 1959 that his boat was reborn. I made an old man quite happy. I've waited for this for 3 years!!

Still need to make a windshield, do wiring and lights, attach step pads and install some piping around the seats.

She's a beauty! and the boat isn't bad either!

Nice work and a real treat to be able to connect with the designer/builder.
