Just got a 1960 Dorsett Catalina. The transom needs some work. Question: Is the stock transom set in a curve or is it straight across. My transom is curved about 3/4in as measured at 24in from center line on both sides of center.

I have two of them and both need transoms. I have one that is so bad the wood is gone, not rotten, Gone.
The other one I will try to get a straight edge across the back and see what it shows to be.
Its not uncommon for them to have a little bow to them.
I think all Skagits have that little bow to the transom if I remember right.
Hey Rick, you restored one with a outboard, do you remember what yours was like across the back ?Helmar Joe Johanesen

It wouldn't surprise me if it was curved. Most of the early 60s glasspars had curved transoms. Easy to work with though, just place your first piece of new wood in there and clamp it to the outer glass. It should flex enough to take the correct shape if the wood isn't too thick.John Forsythe

I got about 3/4 camber on the back as well. My motor was mounted and I took the measurement from the splashwell.
I have another one of those up in Quilcene that the transom is totally rotted out with a 100 hp Merc on the back. That one won't give a good reading with that frozen, broken engine dangling from it.
I see lots of boat that have that curve or camber in the back so its pretty common.
You putting a transom in or thinking about it ??
I have a method of doing that without splitting and lifting the cabin top off the hull.Helmar Joe Johanesen

I made sure I could see all of the cut and I mean ALL of it under the gunnel too so when it came time to put her back together, I can see to put the glass patches on.

Are you planing to repaint your boats upper cabin area ?
Look at this link it will show you where to make your cut. It either this or split the cabin from the hull. Not fun and takes a Long time.
Another question, what is the measurement from the transom top down to the bottom of the keel. Looking to find out if you are setup for a Short Shaft or Long Shaft.Helmar Joe Johanesen
