This may be heresy, but I just don't get the appeal of these things. Even if you like the outrageously out-of-proportion fins, the rest of the boat is not exactly a stunning achievement in design. Take away the fins and the (also out-of proportion) castings and what's left?

    Yuck.

I do like the one that looks like a 59 Chevy, can't recall the name tho.

Obviously, those fins are designed to stabilize the boat when leaping out of the water; preventing dangerous yaw while airborne... similar to the purpose of tailfins on real flying-fish!

Yeah I'm not a big fan either of huge fins, and they do have some practicality issues, but like fins on an old caddy, they look cool and are certainly different...

You're thinking of the Reinell (I forget the model) and you're right, that is a cool boat.

I agree that the boats with fins like the old Caddys, that are a cohesive part of the entire design (like the Reinell Jack mentioned above) are cool. I don't have anything against fins in general, but this particular boat looks like they just glued those huge things on there without any attempt to make them a part of the overall design. I've seen plenty of big fins that were cool, but these ... not so much.

I better shut up before I tick someone off, I guess ... Somewhere, somebody thinks this is the coolest boat ever. At least that price would indicate that.

That annual bathtub race is a classic. It can have more rescues than finishers depending on the weather. It can get pretty ghastly out there in a fifty mile an hour bathtub. Screwy1

I agree, the ol girls do ride like a barn door with a motor on them. I know, I have several of the skagits.

I went back and looked at the "Starting" price of $3500 bucks.

I think if this poor fellow works some place were they have a drug rehab program, that he had better check himself into it.

Tim, No I think that boat is basically ugly and impractical too. It looks like they were trying to corner the "biggest" fins market. But that being said - that it's an ugly, unpractical design - it's still cool. Having that boat restored, or even as a rat-boat, would be cool, if for no other reason than for all the great conversations it would start. If I had 40+ acres and unlimited time & money, I could see taking her home and naming her "Ugly Duck"! But now I've got to get me a racing bathtub! I can put it right next to my snorkeling toilet...

Those aren't fins, they're flippers! But they're still cool.
