  • Early Volvo Penta B18 and B20 engines

Do we have anyone in the group that is pretty fluent with the early Volvo engines ?

I found my B18 to be a pretty good engine with the abuse that I have given it. Kind of makes me want to keep it.
I see some site on the Web were they are taking the B18 and B20's and even running turbos on them.
170HP, no more sip sip sip on fuel with those....

Just looking for what is interchangeable between the two, gaskets as in Head gaskets and other parts.:Skipper1:

    I had a B20 in a 74 Bayliner that I couldn't kill. 4500 RPM hour after hour. I suspect the only difference between B 18s and B 20s is the bore or stroke; probably the bore. The B20 has a 3.5" bore and a 3.15" stroke = 2.0L
    Good little engines.

      Volvo B18 and B20 engines

Been a while since I worked on these.

      B-20 "B"= Benzine or gasoline; 18= 1.8 liter; 20= 2.0 liter displacement.
These are robust four cylinders, forged cranks running in five main bearings.

Fine grain castings made from high-nickle content iron (very strong with little cylinder wear). B-18's and B-20's pretty much the same except for the bore. 3.5" (88.9 mm) for the B-20, 3.375" (85 mm) for the B-18. Same stroke 3.15 inches. The B-20 has bigger valves.

I see these are hot rodded today with roller cams and turbos, making a respectable 220 hp. They are over square, bigger bore than stroke, so they rev high to 7000 rpm and will run 4500 rpm all day. Amazing for a pushrod engine.

If you fresh water cool them in marine application they will last forever.

      Great engines!

Will, I have been busy with my Volvo in my Skagit 20 offshore.

Looked to be the quickest boat to get back in the water.

          So, Out with the old

20 ft Skagit offshore lives again.

Now in with the new engine.
New bilge pumps and cleaned up the whole bilge area.

Looks like I will have a runner again.
Waiting for the Weber 34 ICH kits to freshen up the carbs, new coil and distributor parts.

The last time we used this boat was at the Skagit 50th.
The following year we headed out for the San Juans and she failed.
I guess its been four years :Scared2:
