I looked at my motor I just got to find the water inlet for the lower unit. I could not find any ports on the lower unit. It does have this strange hose and round part. Is this the water pump pick up? Seems strange. Check out the pics and let me know what you think. Thanks, Carl

I could be wrong but I think those engines may have been made by McCullough.

Bail-a-Matic
That's what the round pickup on the hose is, the self bailer. It's been said that the lower units on the Homelites were built by Scott and see some similarity here. So there is nothing directly above the prop or possibly in the exhaust port like on OMC?Dick Johnson

Hi Carl.
Haven't gotten my McCullough dug out yet to see if it looks the same or not. I forgot its kind of buried.
Not too sure who made that engine for Elgin or even the year so its kind of hard to tell.
It Has to be below the back of the lower part of the boat hull because at speed, it would still need to pick up water.
Doesn't seem to be a bunch of Elgin engine owners here...
I did find this on an Internet Search. Funny....Sears never built an engine. They always had them built by someone else.
"Jim, the Elgins were a Sears
"Jim, the Elgins were a Sears store branded models built by either McCulloch or West Bend.
To figure out exactly what you have would need you to find a model number starting with either 571 or 574..."Helmar Joe Johanesen

the water pickup is right under the cavation plater in back of the prop. That little scup. It also has a bailamatic and that is the hose coming out of the top side of the leg
I have 2 1959 40hp Elgins and they are strong running motors
