  • A perfect day with the Homelite

I took the boat out for the first time after sorting out the waterpump problems, took it to a lake on Mt Hood with a friend who had been limiting out there every trip. This Homelite ran the best it ever has, on the lake at 7:00am, threw into gear and trolled for 7 straight hrs at 500rpm between 1.5 and 1.75 mph. Never touched the throttle, not one hiccup just a smooth steady idle all day. I had spent some time synchronizing the linkage between the two carbs and it has payed off big time as it was flawless. No JuJU from Tim's engine, it's running his distributor and driveline. I don't think we used 1.5 gallons of fuel all day. My friend Paul was amazed at everything about the engine and I couldn't have been happier with it's performance!:HandHorn1:

Great job getting that old motor dialed in. Sounds like a nice cruise. :GoodJob:

I know this is an old thread, but 7 hrs at 500 rpms and only using 1.5 gals of fuel...this is exactly why I want one! That and how cool is the cowling...

I was there again last weekend, same results. This year I filled up with straight gas, no ethanol. This engine has been great.

See, I keep telling people but without a local mechanic people are afraid of them.

Working on some of the newer stuff is tends to require more expensive test equipment and tools as they are trying to keep more of this stuff only dealership accessible.
Its like the new motorcycles. Mine was a 96 Harley, last year of the non computer controlled bikes, now with the new ones with the computer, its like a light comes on flashing and says, Take me to your Stealership.
Same with this old Geo Tracker I have been fooling with making what they call a Toad out of it. Under the dash it has what they nick named a Nag switch.
Every 50 thousand miles, the engine light comes on and take me to the Stealership. Nothing can be wrong, you reach under the dash (once you know were this thing is) flip the switch and the light goes out. Another 50k, light comes on, flip the switch and the light goes out..

I have to confess. Marty Loken and a few others have that Honda 50ph outboard motor which seems to be trouble free. The cost is way more than anything I would be able to afford on my SS and you can't tinker with them. I kind of like the tinkering myself.

We just purchased a 30hp Evinrude Etec for our work skiff. Very nice running, quiet, smooth etc. About $6K, ouch!

Which takes us back to the Homelite/Bearcat, inexpensive, economical, and reliable.

                        Helmar:

It turns out that for Mercurys, at least motor prices tend to run in groups. The middle of the pack tends to center around that six grand number. When you go to a bigger block, etc, you get a jump in price of a minimum several thousand dollars. If you buy one you need to purchase a propeller ,controls and a steering wheel system of some kind.

The reason this forty is so expensive is because it has three cylinders and many of the features of the of the bigger motors. The thing I like about new motors is 3 to 5 years of no problems and the ability to run gas with no mixing of oil .

Hmmm, sounds like my 48 year old Homelite, it's on it's 4th yr in my possession, on it's 4th season with no problems and I don't mix oil.
