Blake Island lived up to its reputation as a great saltwater destination for club members, with its soft beach, beautiful forests, central location...and great weather as a bonus. Two dozen folks showed up with 13 boats--a nice turnout--and a fine time was had by all, relaxing on the beach, getting acquainted with new members, enjoying picnic lunches and, of course, admiring each other's old boats.

Tim McCrain and son Brendan stayed the longest, arriving Friday and staying two nights...probably heading home today, unless they decide to set up permanent residence. Greg James overnighted Friday night, and Mike Wood and his son planned to camp out last evening...but the rest of us came just for the day.

Eric Pokorney (The Wiz) and friends made their first club event in Eric's nifty Wizard runabout. Allan and Sue Martin had their first boat ride aboard the just-restored 1958 Dorsett Farallon, and also enjoyed their initial meeting with other club members. (We'll see them again during this summer's South Sound Adventure, if not sooner.) We launched our '58 Bell Boy 16' express for the first time--unrestored but functional--and were relieved that everything worked fine.

Other participants included Chuck Carey and his son Dan, Tim Mattson and family, Ken Cooke and his wife Celeste (nice to see her at an event again), Ingvar Carlson, Chuck Bauer with his ocean-worthy Beachcraft inboard-outboard, Rick Love and Richard Amberson (who Tim swears is his "great-grandfather.")

Wow Marty; the two photo's of the Farallon under way could be posterized or used in a Dorsett Brochure!
The Bake Island run was a shake down for the upcoming San Juan event, checking the new fuel flow meter and handling characteristics of the whale.
Cruising at 20-22 mph with ChuckC it uses 6.5-8 gal per hr. Not bad for a 24' V8. But it really gets interesting approaching 35-40, watching the fuel flow go quickly past 14, to 18 to 24 and then i decided my wallet was light enough. With a 35 gal capacity, I'm not sure how ocean worthy she is.
Good to see a lot of boats at Blake, hpe the weather holds for the next weekend!

The Wizzard is powered by a _ _ hp Evenrude- ?

Also the club should invest in a small vinyl Raft. A 12v blower will inflate it.
This way we can anchor our beautiful CLASSIC BOATS 20-30 ft
off shore . It broke my heart to see our Boats get battered about from the cruiser waves on the rocks on the beach. These rafts are $ 30-50 . If we need a contribution fund, count me in. Ingvar

What a great day it turned out to be ! Rick Love with his good looking Dorsett San Juan and my son Dan as we started down from Everett with good water conditions and our stop at Eagle harbor to meet up with Marty with his latest nice Bellboy. Allan & Sue Martin was also there with their 1958 Dorsett Farallon.Very nice restore ! We traveled along at 22-24 knots to and from Blake and on the way back ChuckB ( with the whale) until he left us at Ballard and GregJ until we got to Edmonds. Before we left Everett , Everett police wanted to do a inspection at the dock until he saw our new (2011) CG sticker. What's with the inspection thing ? That makes 2 out of 3 times this year. Never was stop before with any of my other boats. Most of the pictures were to and from Everett. It was nice seeing everyone and some of the new members as well. Roundtrip trip was 86 miles and about 12 gal of gas. Chuck

Great Time /perfect weather

Had a great time met a few new people and got to connect names with faces. First day was a nice cruise down with Chuck & Dan, everything ran great went over and met Marty & Allan and Sue then off to Blake. My first time down there and what a beautiful spot. Nice beach to land on and great view of the other islands. Went around the Island later and got a spot in the Marina and very nice Park host. Camped out with Tim & Brendan McCrain and Mike Wood and his Son Jake. Great campsites very secluded and nice mowed grass to set the tents on. It was a great view of the Seattle Skyline from our campsite and the busy traffic of the ferries made for a perfect evening. Broke out the game box and played some poker till dark and sat around the fire talking till 11:30 (Pretty late for camping ) I slept on the boat in the Marina and it was pretty interesting when the band of pirate Raccoon's boarded my boat around 2:00 A.M. They don't even try to be quiet. Got going around 0630 and had a great camp stove breakfast with some percolator coffee and headed back to Everett about 10:30. It was good to have Mike and his son Jake on a bonding adventure and seeing Jake get hot dogs for breakfast ! That's camping with Dad ! Thanks to everyone who attended it was a great day and night !

Rick, Great pictures. By the way see that beach house kind of a "A" shape red roof at the left end of the picture of Marty zipping along. That was our summer house in the 40's and 50's. Loved that place. That's how i got hooked on boats and ferries. Being i thought maybe the 20' Skagit might be the last boat , that's why i named it Bainbridge. Chuck

5 degree's of separation

I was at the wash off station at the Everett launch and a 17' Skagit pulled up next to me and it was named" Kalakala " Guy stepped out and I said " That must be one of Chucks old boats" It was Stuart and he said he just got it running and was going to go out fishing . Chucks old boats are everywhere !! :shocked2:

I talked to him Sat night about 7pm. He wanted to know if i would be interested in buying it back for $3500.00. Told him i have the 20 Skagit and a 17' Express in waiting if i ever get the itch.I don't think it will be soon. Back in 1998 i sold the boat on consignment thru Bayside Marine so Stuart and i did not deal direct plus that would be $1100.00 more that i sold it for.He did say he saw me go thru Everett after getting back from Blake and told a friend ,i bet that Skagit named "Bainbridge" was Chuck being that's where i have always put the names on the side, Rosario,Kalakala,Willapa. Yep it was. Then he told me that he is going to put it back on CL for $5000.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( pictures are from his CL ad ) but in the next breath he thinks he will may keep it after all ??????? Wow.

What an awesome weekend this was! Brendan and I had a great time camping with Greg, Rick, Mike and Jake. I really enjoyed seeing everyone and meeting new members on Saturday. We got to check out Eric's Wizard, Mike's Glastron and Allan and Sue's beautiful Dorsett. First Class work as usual, Marty! Also got a first look at Marty's Bell Boy, which he swears he is keeping. Uh Huh. And I won't make any more corny jokes ...

It amazes me how the weather has cooperated this year, it was just gray enough to keep a lot of people at home and leave the marina at Blake uncrowded, but we only got about two minutes of drizzle Friday morning and then it was dry all weekend. Saturday night was gorgeous, with a few pink clouds at twilight, the moon reflecting in the water and the lights of Seattle shining above the black sound. Just beautiful. This morning started out bright and sunny and we had smooth water all the way home. Rick cruised with us to our destination at the Port of Edmonds then continued on his way to Everett.

Later that same day...

Here's Tim fishing for ling cod. I always thought you needed a pole, but what do I know. We used a pole and we didn't catch any either.

Your pictures really came out well. Blake 2011 15.jpg (15 of 15) is iconic, suitable for framing.

Camping out Saturday at Blake was just as Tim described: Fun and beautiful, with perfect weather conditions for relaxing on water or land.

This state park is well kept and comfortable for campers, and the company could not have been more congenial.

The wild (?) animals in residence there have little fear. At twilight, we sauntered by quite close to a number of deer that had come down from woods inland to graze near the camping area, while growling racoons chased each other around the trunk of a tree. With the moon shining like a beacon on the water, the view from shore was very pleasant.

For son Jake and I this was a first experience of 'boat camping'. Thanks to the Classic Boat Club, we had a great weekend.
