Richard Amberson, organizer of the recently-announced event for Saturday, May 16, has provided more details for the gathering, which would focus on a dockside lunch at the Foss Waterway maritime museum in Tacoma, then a trip across to Vashon Island's beautiful Quartermaster Harbor.
Here's Richard's report, received today:
"The Point Defiance ramp is located next to the Vashon ferry landing. It is all new as of last year. There are 8 or 10 concrete ramps, all but two usable at all tides. There are new floating docks at each ramp, plus additional tie-up space. There are a few parking spaces for two vehicles and trailers in the adjoining parking lot, but the main parking area is a short way up the hill. Launch fee is $11.00.
"Redondo's ramp is two lanes, concrete with floating docks. Parking is across the street. Fee is $6.00, paid to automated machine. Those launching at Redondo would likely by-pass Point Defiance and go directly to Foss Waterway in Tacoma, a run of perhaps 40 minutes.
"Foss Waterway Seaport has a new, very long dock in front with 4 hours free moorage. The building is the restored wheat warehouse that served sailing ships at the turn of the century. It houses the Working Waterfront Museum, where volunteers build and restore old wooden boats. there are interesting marine artifacts including Willets canoes and original rowboats built by Andew Foss, the founder of Foss Launch & Tug Co. On the other end of the parking lot is a bar and grille which features light lunches, so NWCBC members can either bring picnic lunches or eat at the cafe.
"The park at Dockton in Quartermaster Harbor (near the south end of Vashon Island, across from Tacoma's waterfront), has ample floating docks. there is a restroom on the dock and a grassy picnic area.
"The idea would be to launch at either Point Defiance or Redondo at about 10 a.m. on May 16, rendezvous at Foss Waterway Seaport for lunch at about 11:30-noon, cruise to Quartermaster Harbor and then return to our launch sites. This triangular course would pretty much fill up the afternoon. An option, of course, would be to go to Gig Harbor instead of Quartermaster, or do both, but we could easily squeeze too much into one day. There's enough in the area for two or three outings--it's just a matter of where everyone would like to go."
As mentioned in a recent post, Richard doesn't have a computer. He sometimes gets to read our message board when visiting his son's house, but mostly he mails me neatly-typed letters, which I'm happy to post here on the board.
Hopefully, we'll have a great turnout for this event, which is two weeks after the Opening Day Parade, and two weeks before the Lake Tapps Poker Run.
