Yet another nice NWCBC event, with calm waters, T-shirt weather once the clouds burned off, and a terrific mix of boats and boaters, including Chuck Bauer with his 19' Sabrecraft Catalina; Greg James and Susie Starrfield with their 17' Skagit express; Joe and Carol Johanesen with their 16' Skagit Ski-Master hardtop; Chuck Carey and his son Daniel running Chuck's big Dorsett Farallon 21-footer; Tom and Robyn Hansen, who get the long-distance award for trailering their Glasspar Club Mariner all the way from Toledo, Oregon; new member Andy Eoff with his beautiful Glen-L 18-foot express cruiser; Jim Brooks with his "modern" 1979 Glasply 19-foot express; Bruce, Eileen and Patrick Drake running their 20-foot Skagit Offshore, and Marty Loken with his 1955 Lady Clipper 18' express.
Everyone made the rendezvous at Eagle Harbor, pulling out and heading south for Blake Island right on schedule at 10:30 a.m. under overcast skies. Once we reached Blake Island, some members beached their boats and hiked the island's perimeter trail (part way), while others had lunches aboard their boats while drifting offshore. We left Blake shortly after noon, heading through Rich Passage, then up the west side of Bainbridge Island. After zipping through Agate Pass, everyone entered Miller Bay, with some going ashore and others adjourning at that point to head back to their respective launch ramps/marinas in Edmonds, Seattle and Eagle Harbor.
Many thanks to Bruce and Eileen Drake for making their beach available in Miller Bay--and thanks to everyone else for carefully maintaining the buddy system.
After getting into Miller Bay, we took Bruce's advice and visited with Jerry High at Island View Marine Center, a boats-and-motors business just inside Miller Bay. Jerry is just as nutty as the rest of us--maybe worse!--since he currently owns eight (yes, 8) Glasspar G-3 runabouts, including a few totally restored beauties and a bunch that need everything. Jerry also has some gorgeous vintage Merc outboards (see photos).
A great day on the water!
