  • New-Old Boat

Since this is a sailboat topic I figured it should maybe go in the Flotsam and Jetsam category...since sailboats make only rare appearances here.

This week we picked up a 30-year-old semi-vintage catboat, 15 feet overall, built in 1981 by Squadron Yachts of Bristol, R.I. (The company, like many others, was only around for half a dozen years, mostly building fiberglass versions of classic wooden-boat designs, including models like the Herreshoff America, Herreshoff Bar Pilot--an 18-foot motor launch--and others. This one was called the Minuteman, apparently intended to be compatible marketing-wise with the Herreshoff America...hence the flag theme on the sail.

It has a gaff rig, one of my favorites, and a knife-shaped centerboard. It's easy to sail, goes to windward nicely, and can easily accommodate four adults...so it'll be the perfect daysailer for Mystery Bay and adjoining Kilisut Harbor.

Mo and I went for our first sail with the catboat this afternoon, then I dropped her off to take a few photos showing the Minuteman under sail...below.

Powerboats are obviously a lot of fun, but there's nothing quite like the free (and quiet) ride you get with a sailboat!

Nice cat, Marty! Love the gaff rig.

Hey, if someone wins the lottery, would you be so kind as to have one of those Secret Cove 24s built for me so I can die happy? Thanks in advance!

              look more closely

I think that is Marty body-surfing on the starboard side until the next tack. The wonders of autopilot on small boats.

                  Wa-hooooooooo!

(Actually, I think we had moments like that yesterday while teaching my 12-year-old granddaughter to sail the boat. She did great, but it was sure exciting at times...)
