My wife's 40th is approaching fast and I have done jack and squat to put something together for her. I'm thinking of taking her up to Friday Harbor but looking for some input. Do you guys have any preferences on which islands in the San Juans or places to stay and things to do up there?

Kelly, I would spend the time on San Juan Island at Friday Harbor. You can fly, drive, even take the Victoria Clipper out of Seattle to Friday Harbor or leave your car at Anacortes or whatever. Orcas & Lopez is alright too, but there is more things going on in Friday Harbor. They even have a couples of old fashion movie theaters. There you go !

West beach resort on the north side of Orcas: http://www.westbeachresort.com/
Rent a cabin on the beach, bring the boat, and explore the north San Juans.
Winter is the best time, you have the whole place to yourself. We had a blast!
As you can see, I had to hang on a buoy. They pull the dock out during the winter.

Yea, it would be $200 + in the off season... It's a arm and a leg taking your boat on the ferry. Maybe once you get your boat finish some of the guys will be going up this year ? Here's some pictures from 2012.We stop off at Lummi Island to say hi to Jerry & Becky McRorie ( Lootas1). From Left to right is Jerry, Lowell , Me and GregJ. Lowell was our leader on this fun event ! Last picture is Jerry & Becky, Lowell and GregJ holding the cookies Becky made for us. Yum,Yum ! Once you have been there you will want to go back !Attached Files- DSCN1845.JPG (155.6 KB, 1 view)

If you drive up there is plenty to do, especially on San Juan and Orcas, but you'll wish you brought a boat. If you don't to pay for the ferry and you trust your motors, launch at Cap Sante or Washington Park. You can either camp at one of the many state parks or check in to one of the resorts. You can get just about anywhere in a couple of hours. If it takes longer, that's even better. I wish I was up there all the time.
