58/59 Del Mar

Since you guys have a lot of cuddys and I have a chance to get this 58/59 del mar cuddy in good shape over all but is missing a few trim pieces and would need a full resto I just thought id ask your thoughts. Its my neighbors boat and he said hell sell it for $400 bUt I dont want to pay that much for a boat I dont much care for but thought id make him a offer. Im going to start my g3 resto in April i think and dont need anything side tracking me but it is a complete del mar with a like year 50hp evinrude. I like the hard top is why Im thinking about it but I have to hurry before someone gets it 1st.
Truth is since work has been slow I have to watch my pennies and really should focus on the g3 1st because boats will always come around but its in my neighbor hood and looks great from 20 feet back.
Anybody know if these little 16' crusers are smooth riding boats on chop?
Maby Ill offer him $200 and store it for a while if hell take that little or just pass on it...MOTOR IS IN UNKNOWN CONDITION, TRAILER IS RUSTING THROUGH. ALL WOOD IS SHOT..

...turn and run Mike, like you say, distractions will take away from the g3 you really want to get done. Let your neighbor store the Del Mar on his dime, eventually he may tire of looking at it-and gift it to the local boat resto genius...Mike!

Make the offer

Mike, If you dont really care about the boat that much and your intrigued because its avalable and its right their make him a $200 offer and if it happens great. If it doesn't than you will still have that money for the boat you really want. I stopped and looked at a Skagit 24' that I loved but was not sure about. After 2 years of thinking about it and stopping to look at it I decided to buy it so I wouldnt have to waste anymore time thinking about it. That was 3 years ago and I still have the boat. I still love it but am not sure I want to put the time into restoring it. But at least Im not kicking myself for letting it get away. John

Mike, I agreed with So-Mo. It sounds like there is to many NEG's you have about it. That boat is going to cost you a small fortune to restore. The first thing you would need is a good Trailer,then checking out the motor. If you don't much care for it as you said, pass on it. The $$$$'s are just going to start ringing up. Do your G-3. Because you ALL think I should pass then I will pass. Now if you guys said Its a great boat and I should get it then I would make him a offer but Im running out of space. If I end up with it great but I feel like I need to act now or ill lose my chance but whatever.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Classics are, well, depends on the classic I guess.

One of our members has that boat as well as the Mariner and calls the boat your looking at a girls boat, as he built it for his wife.

It is kind of rare but then again, the asking price is a tad high.
If the transom has never been replaced and its had that big boat anchor hanging on the back, then I would suspect it would need a transom some time soon, just guessing.

The windshield is out of an old Stude car, not sure what year, once that is broken, forget ever getting a windshield for it.

Its a hard call, but you should find more classics to choose from down your way.
Up here, every time you clear out a mountain of blackberrys, you tend to find a classic hidden in them

Me, IF, I wanted it, $200 tops, and Please, KEEP the motor, no one wants those.

Actually the delMar's are all rare, not many of them made. The '61 and '62 being the most rare, but the '58 is right there. Offer the guy 200 and just let it sit. It's worth that much. That hull design is probably the best 16' classic hull. There are people who take the old Seafair hulls and make open fishing boats out of them.
My del Mar did 42 mph with a 3 cyl 75hp Erude. 35 with a Honda 50 and got around 10 mpg at 20mph. Good hull. Good luck.

If it was sitting in my neighbor's yard, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But, then, I'm a total rotten-boat addict and have always appreciated the looks and ride characteristics of Delmars. (And, as these things go, your neighbor's Glasspar looks to be in pretty good cosmetic shape, even if it needs a transom, new cockpit floor, etc.)

Chuck Bauer, who commented above, may have more on-the-water experience with Delmars than the rest of us combined, so his thoughts are worth considering.

Offer or Pass?

I've had to shed projects in order to finish one. This is the 22nd year I've had the Saratogan (Skagit 31). They take a lot longer and are more expensive to restore that you might think.

On the other hand, the Delmar looks fairly complete and you could just sit on it until the economy recovers (how old did you say you were?).

I'd do what the guys on Pawn Stars do when they aren't crazy about some item: offer 40% $160 That would be a win-win scenario....

1958 del mar

i managed to drag home this last weekend, "for free" all original and complete and original trailer to boot. i have everything you need to restore and duplicate if you do get it. personally i would get it, as long as the hull is in good shape and most of the trim is there, trailers are easy to restore and wood is easy to replace, all your money will be dumped into the hull and trim replacement.

HA HA, Goofy4glass, your the reason im even looking at this boat by posting that new boat you got last week. Then jerrfylubesdad talked to the guy for me and thats where im at. I like your del mar color (red) better.
I guess i'll stop thinking about it. I'll think about offering the guy something and expect him to turn it down and focus on the g3 instead and next year I can look for the next boat to restore after the g3's done which I hope I can begin soon.
I like that darn Del Mar though but bad timing I guess, Mike

you know the del mar not a bad boat by any means, she's light, compact, and will push right along with a smaller outboard, perfect with just two people and some gear. they shure dont like speed, they like 20 too 35 kknots max, not like the club mariner, one of the best hull designs ive ever driven.

Trust me, this is not a distraction. If something else better comes up cabin wise I should have no problem selling it for what I have in it but I dig it. I think its cool!
