  • got the bayliner done yay!!!!

    hey guys,
finally i got a boat done and ready for the water.have one question tho i got the motor on yesterday it's a 60hp evinrude selec shift runs fine not sure if it's supposed to be peeing out of the holes just below the cowling or if it's the kind that sends the water back out thru the prop? when it was running yesterday in the bucket in neutral it semed like it was pumpin water cause water was comming out of the bucket with force. also i might have the oil to heavy or is it supposed to smoke like that?not sure of the exact mix ratio!!! here are a couple pics. anyone busy next weekend?????

Looks like about the right amount of smoke for running in a barrel. The water out the pee hole is to let you know the water pump is pumping. Proper oil mixture is important in all outboard motors. I'm on my way in the morning to get four quarts of Amzoil synthetic and I'll run it at 50:1 in my 1986 'Rude 50. This mixture is about right for most motors after the 1950s, I've found. Okay, not for you Homelite guys but that's another matter.l

Jerry, I'am going to switch over after i burn off the last of the 12 gal in the Port tank ( on the Farallon ) and then in the Starboard after i go thru the last 25 gals. I still have about 6 qtrs of Quicksilver oil left to burn up in the G-3. Where are you getting yours and how much per quart is it? Chuck.

Yes, good chance if that fuel has sat for awhile, the gas has evaporated and might possibly made it even richer, but Hey!!....A Runner

                Hi Chuck,
The dealer in Ferndale quoted me a total, tax and shipping of $44.45 for four qts. That comes out to $11.11 a qt. total. Think that is about what it costs online.

Looks to me like a nicely "Fogged " motor being run after some resting.
They usually put off Blu smoke when put away correctly.
Cooling: The older OMCs sometimes do not have a real telltale, with water coming out relief ports at upper rear of mid-section and then most going down the exhaust. As you throttle up and the relief springs do their thing, water then flows more freely from the upper rear holes.
Use a wet finger on head to tell if it`s getting hot or cooling as needed.T-stats do need to open and close.....
I`d run engine with Engine Tuner,De-carbonizer or Ring-Free thru the fuel system and /or sprayed down the carb while at fast idle ,let soak 15 minutes then run to clear it out.Never leave this stuff inside without running.
On the water is best ,hopefully away from Crab and shellfish beds and never in lake used as a city resevoir.
Plop an oil Zorb below the prop if doing this in the driveway, then dispose of properly when black.
If in doubt on fuel ,buy or borrow a small 3/6 gallon tank to test run with a fresh mix, then switch to it and see if the motor changes or reacts.
You`ll want to remove the fuel end and cycle fuel back into the tank ,until the oil is fully mixed.Start it up without doing this and you`ll possibly suck up more oil than gas, with the remaining fuel now leaner than you want.
An inline Mohler glass fuel filter can reveal how much oil or if air bubbles are in your fuel lines.Mount one in front of the motor so you can look back and see what is flowing......mine has red oil so I look for a Pink color.
Hope that Electric lower unit does what it is supposed to.....
                  Tim M
ps $120.00 for a case of Synthetic oil seems a bit steep, but then again ,the Basic OMC Xd-30 is now $75.00 for 2.5 gallons.

                    Bearcats Rule

                    Wow.
45 bucks for for 4 quarts, 75 bucks for 2.5 gallons??

My Bearcat might not be a hot rod engine but I am liking her even more now.
I like the idea of Changing just 4 quarts of oil from her, which I use for bar oil on the chain saw
