  • Anyone ever seen one of these? Can you ID it?

Here's an outboard that you don't see every day. The second image is of the powerhead.

    Anyone know what it is?

Looks like it says scot, as in Scott Atwater.

How about a radial engine with turbo boost from exhaust gasses?

Did anything like that ever exist? Is it a new prototype?

    Anybody?

I'll vote it's a Wankel with a turbo. New one on me....

That outboard looks real weird does anyone know if they ever build that model?

            OK...Here's the Answer

            Hi,

Did any of you enjoy Popular Science Magazines as a kid? I used to devour those issues in the 50's and 60's! They never failed to have interesting articles, and most everything that they featured was simple enough for me to understand...and always left me wanting for more.

Then; there was their "Prediction of the Future" articles. Often a bit far-fetched, and it's hilarious now to look back on them and see which (if any) of their predictions came true. Quite a lot of them were spot-on; actually.

Anyway....the pictures are from a 1961 issue of PopSci...."What's Coming in Outboads". It is a prototype by Scott; a 4 cylinder radial design fitted with a "TurboSupercharger". Said to produce 125 HP. I don't know if it was ever produced; or if that prototype was functional and still may exist today somewhere. Any Scott fans out there??????

They talk about a lot of other concepts on the drawing board; see how many of them ended up in production

I present the article here; courtesy of Google Books:

So Sammanish...you were right on the money! How'dya know?

Just spent too much time looking at engineering design prototypes. It looked like a prototype turbo charged Radial to me. The flat bolt on cylinder heads said prototype not production to my feeble brain, and the turbo boost was obvious.

It is an interesting concept, but Scott turned into Mucculoch and decided drop outboards. I have an air cooled Mucculoch outboard that I have to dig into someday when time permits.
