  • Purchasing Older boats in Oregon

A word of warning regarding Oregon Trailers.

If you purchase an older boat in Oregon, be sure it has a license plate, even expired. For many years, Oregon didn't require one on boat trailer and therefore you will need a bill of sale, maybe even notorized. If buying from estate you will need a copy of the Death Certificate. On bill of sale have sellor indicate how much for the boat and how much for the trailer.

If there is no license plate, check for a VIN number on the boat trailer. If there isn't one you may be in a world of hurt because legally you can't move it in Washington. They won't even issue a trip permit without it.

Then you need to make an appointment with the WAST Patrol Inspection Center to get a Vin Number assigned to it, as if you had made your own trailer. Getting an appointment reportedly takes up to four weeks in the busy summer. Trailers with GVW of 2000# or less are much less of a problem because they don't require brakes. GVW will be determined by visit to local truck scale.

See DOT regs for more info.

Don't ask how I found all this out.
