  • Possible Update again.

    Hi Folks.
I would like your help with this.
I need to get a feel for how many of you are using Smart Phones, Ipad, Ipad Mini's or some sort of new type tablet to access our Forum. ??

In fact, the Polling is such a scookum feature, I will use it here
You can choose Both if you use both computer and smart phone like me.

Most of the new computer type stuff has been going towards this Window 8 touch screen application.
Some of us are technicality challenged, or Want to be My goal here is to make this as easy as possible with keeping the security at its highest point. (we fight that all the time, constant security upgrades are being implemented all the time)

My thinking is to find a good, what is referred to as a Mobil App for us as that is what direction we are headed.
No worries, we will always have two options

Let me know what you think please.

Are you talking about having a mobile app developed for the site? If so, that is a tough one. Apple products have enjoyed a big user share over the years and have a big user base. However, Android actually has more market share than iPhones/tablets now. And there are also a number of smaller market devices like Windows Tablet.

My advise would be to make the website mobile aware if anything. This would change screen formatting, etc without having to have a platform specific app.

They have already created mobile apps for forums like ours so its the matter of choosing one that is modifiable to our needs.
You are right on the different Smart Phone and tablet products available.
I just hope they keep a standard and don't give in to Microsofts crap.:computers1:
No strong opinion here. I can't tell people here what to do with that bandwidth sucking Bing either

No worries. We will have the standard PC format plus some sort of Mobile App. One can choose what they like :Skipper1:

Do you have metrics on which browsers are most used on the site and what their pull down it? I'm curious as to why you say Bing is bandwidth sucking (mostly because I'm an IT guy).

I am using only an HP desktop PC with Wndows XP and Internet Explorer 8. I'll not change to a later version of Windows until Microsoft regains its mind.

Uh Bill, I don't think I would wait for that..
I too have fallen back from that Vista mistake to XP Pro as it was one of the more stable OS's they put out but hey, they are All Broken.
I was there and one of the beta testers for Windoze 95.:computers1:
It was very buggy, 95 Second Addition, 98, 98SE, ME, all broken.

We have a few members that have gotten tired of the virus garbage pointed at MS and have gone to Linux.
All they use the system for was Email, Internet searching and maybe a few letters and maybe a spread sheet and that is all Free on the Linux systems.

                  Keep your XP updated :BigHappy1:

                    Being Ready

The more I am looking around, the more Ipad's I see in use, the more tablets and smart phones being used too.
Its just the matter of time before the standard type laptops and desktops are going to be fazed out.
I was just talking to my old foreman that I had at my service company way back when. He is telling me how stable windows 7 is. Windows 8 is touch screen which they are taking the laptop and other systems towards.

We just need to be ready is all.

This is going to be GREAT!!!! We can sit at our desktops, be on the internet, AND get a super workout with our arms and shoulders!!!!! Who knew that Microsoft would be so public-spirited as to help us so much with our physical fitness???!!!!! Of course, we have to cooperate by placing our screens close enough to reach. (Helmar, please let me know IF they ever do recover their mind. Until then, I'll be on Windows XP.)

Only a slight flaw in that, Windows is slated to stop supporting XP users Janruary 2014... We were fighting Microsoft with all our might at work and finally had to upgrade all our computers to Windows7 cause the latest edition of our 3D software wouldn't run on XP.

Helmar, I use a standard desktop (Windows7, w/Google Chrome) 75% of the time and my iPhone5 the rest of the time. Once I learned the formating on the iPhone5 version of the forum it is actually quite easy to use.

As far as I can tell, their lack of support does not have any effect upon whether the OS keeps on working as it always has, with all the things that it previously could interface with. I believe that it just means that they won't help me avoid any new horrible virus, or that they will not fix any software bug that they have finally found. The fact is, I still have several Windows versions previous to XP that continue to do the simple things that I use them for. Again, let me know when they will once again allow me to use the desktop as a desktop, and not have to wave my arms around pretending that I am on a smartphone or something similar. (BTW, I am not a Luddite. I was an electronics tech in the Navy, later earned a BSEE, and then worked 41 years in Silicon Valley mostly running product development groups. I just know what I like and what I will or will not use.)

Added a day later ---- Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into a monologue. I really do hope and think that Microsoft will reach the conclusion that desktops are used in different ways than "portables", such as in offices, and that they will provide a means to get most of the "new" features available to us without requiring the use of a touch screen. (I have a mental picture of dozens of cubicle-dwellers doing their aerobics together while turning out reports on PCs.)

                              This just made my day!!!

I am sitting in my brand new office looking around at a room full of young engineers and designers who are all of the "touchscreen" generation and I think it would be hilarious to see all of us building our 3D models with over exaggerated hand gestures and swiping our fingers across the screen (that is typically 12-18 inches away to decrease eye fatigue)...
