It seems that once you learn something well enough to take care of it, things change.
We are still using the early version of Vbulletin 3.8.7 patch level 3. They have moved on to greater versions but us, like others, have held fast with the 3.0 series due to it being more stable and bug free. 4.0 and 5.0 versions have been out for some time but still buggy enough that the sales and support is down for it.
Most programmers that know Vbulletin tend to shy away from the newer versions.
Also once they sold out to the new people, the game has changed.
Meaning what we had was a Life time Membership and support with Version 3 but once they went to version 4, we were supposed to buy the whole 300 dollar package thing yet again.
We held back hoping for something to change. What changed was the creators of Vbulletin had moved on.
By the first of the year, we will no longer have support (security from spammers and such) which means, I have to make a change.:computers1:
Here are some options I am looking at.
The main thing I am looking for is stability and security first. Then looking for support companies who write applications that work with the forum software that we choose.
The options and more when I know more. (man, I knew this was coming too, just the matter of time )
http://xenforo.com/ <-- This is made by the guys that made vBulletin
3.8. It is probably the newest forum software on the market, but it is
stable and pretty nifty. This is a paid software, 140 to 200 dollars
depending on what you get.
http://www.simplemachines.org/ <-- This is stable software, but the
look and feel I don't much care for, and administration can be a pain.
However, it is free with a lot of mediorce free addons.
http://www.invisionpower.com/apps/board/ <-- This is vBulletin's
biggest rival, and probably the most stable and mature forum software
currently. It has a few official paid addons that are VERY polished
and integrate very well, but they cost a little extra. For just the
forum software it is 175 dollars, for the forum software plus an image
gallery it is 228 dollars.
