That vid reminds me of my first boat building experience as a kid. I build wooden hydros and towed them behind my bike.

Our 1961 Stiletto must have been an early mule for this "approved" quality control program. Which is why it is number 5 in line for resto work at present.

Bicycle Hydro Races

Great old photo, Greg...really takes me back.

We grew up in Ballard (Scandinavian neighborhood in Seattle), and I fondly remember furious races towing mini hydros behind our bikes. The local sprint races were just around the neighborhood, but we often had a marathon that would involve dragging hydros from 34th and Northwest 67th (not far from Shilshole Marina) all the way east across 65th to Green Lake, then around Green Lake and back to the home neighborhood. If your string broke you were disqualified (at least if anyone saw what happened before you tied it back onto the bike). I don't know what the distance to and from Green Lake might have been, but it seemed to take all day with those heavy, old Schwinns!

It wasn't long, of course, before we were building Mini-max hydros and racing with our 5hp Johnsons in Salmon Bay, just outside the Government Locks...but the bike-hydro races were a lot more competitive, and open to anyone who had--or could borrow--a bike.

WOW I'm impressed. It's not the distance so much, but up and over Phinney Ridge, not once but twice. My wife grew up at 65th & Sycamore so I know the area well.

Street hydros

Glad the old Hydro pic brought back fond memories guys, my era was the early 70's and the first pickle fork hulls. My friends and I had every boat replicated in correct colors and appropriate tail fins. I usually root for the underdog, so Miss Budweiser was relegated to others, my best street hydro was the 1972 Pay n Pak/Miss Madison of Billy Schumacher on up to the first turbine powered boat.

Those were the good old days for me, I was jealous of any kid that had the resources to have a real hydro like Marty and is the reason I'm into vintage boats today....Who was your driver/boat of choice?

My favorite was Miss Bardhal with Miss SloMo being second. I always painted the boat I towed behind my bike green. Miss Bardhal used to be on display at the Dearbon street Goodwill store in Seattle. Miss SloMo 3 or maybe it was 4 was at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. I don't know if either of these boats are still there. These boats were being used during my childhood, but I visited them both as an adult. I grew up on the edge of Lake Washington and still remember the sounds those Alisons and Merlins made. I found a website with more current info about the "Green Dragon".
