  • Stiletto gets wet.....finally!

I got this boat for cheap a couple years ago from a fellow FG member (hi Jim!). Did a little fiberglass repair on the floor and right side (deck was riding the hull and created a crack near the controlls area). Then it went out back under a tarp for a year. Picked up a donor boat also for cheap and used the seats, steering and power head off of it. Went thru my stash and found a suitable windshield. My daughter and stepson were volunteered to sand it down and primer the deck. It actually made it into the garage for a while when I converted it to a short shaft and my cousin put together a lower with a short driveshaft. While in the garage, it also got the flame job. Then it was back to tarp town for another year!
Last week was the last car race of the year for us (I started racing circle track street stocks again), so after putting all of that away, we pulled off the tarp and drug it out of the weeds. Finished up the controlls, set up a gas tank and battery and gave it a crank. Started right up! Found a prop that I thought close to what it needed and gathered up the life jackets. I was ready to hit Lake Stevens on Thursday after work but guess what, RAIN!
Well yesterday was dry, so off to the lake we went. Did some on the water tuning and played with the tilt holes. Boy am I pleased. Runs strong for a little 66 cu. in. 'baby 6'! Handles like you would expect, smooth and fast in a straight line, but turning is a bit of a challenge!
We went for the low tech Rat Rod (wally world grey and red primer @ $1 a can!) look on this little boat and think we pulled it off. Who says you have to spend a bunch of money to enjoy this hobby!

    Hey, Rat Rodders....

Very cool old-school approach, Gordon and Cheryl. Congrats on getting it finished and functional.

Any idea what sort of speed you were getting with the smaller Stack...and which Merc model is it, exactly?

Hmmmm, A Stiletto, Hey wait, I have one just like that used to be, come to think of it, I got it from you.

Mine is half stripped sitting by the road. Even uglier than when I got it .

I've had two offers on it while it was sitting. Just shows you there are crazier people out there.

We are redeploying boats and shelters this fall. The aluminum row boat gets finished before it, we need the row boat to get Lil Red in from the Bouy when it launches next year. But maybe the stiletto will get back under a shelter for more stripping this winter.

It will end up a solar/battery powered fishing scow when I am done. Front and rear bench seats, pole holders and not much else. on Rainy days we will use Lil Red.

It will never be "Good Looking" like yours, just functional and cheap.

              Hey, Jack-

I like the "custom boat stand" you got there; it's all natural, right?

Merc on the Stiletto is a 1962 fgs 700 on a 63 short mid with a 61? non shift top and faceplate, I think. Parts around here get mixed up quite often! Only getting 33 mph with the 2 of us and an extra tank of gas. Got a 3 blade 19 on it now, may try a 21 and jack the motor up a bit later this month if the weather stays as nice as it has.

That is just too cool Gordon. I like the idea that you can make the Mercs work for you. I myself just had too much bad luck with them, But, I do have a sweet little 50 Merc that is white and lower bearings gone in the lower unit I keep turning over to make sure she dose not stick.

Just got my shop up and have room for an attic which will be built for goodies.
Right now, its pretty much empty so I am looking more AROUND the Stiletto and saying COOL, Look at the goodies sorted in place and Lots of goodies too

I believe that boat stand is what is refereed to as a "Mariners Log" but I could be wrong.

                      Ahh Yes!

I've always heard it was important to "keep a log", now we know why!
