On a very beautiful northwest day, members of the Classic Boat Club met at Mayfield lake for another wonderful event. Members in attendance were Mike and Judy Kronick, Greg James and Susie Starfield, Kent and Diane Hodges, Dennis and Barbara Huffman, Tom and Robyn Hansen, Richard Amberson, Joe and Amanda Bistryski, and Tom Horn who we passed early in the day. We gathered in the morning at the Mayfield lake resort before beginning our voyage up the lake to the famed "grotto". For those who have been to Mayfield you know what a beautiful boat ride it is. So after eating "Mad Dogs" wake across the lake we entered the "grotto" which happens to be one of the most beautiful trips up the Cowlitz river you can take on your boat. It can become quite narrow in places and the shoreline can sneak up and bite you as Kent and Diane will tell you. As we were entering the "grotto" we were making our way around a large collection of debris and Kent, eager to recruit a new member who was passing us in a '63 pacific mariner, uh, well.....kind of....shall we say"bumped" the starboard side of his boat on the rocks. After a quick inspection all was well and we continued up river. The lake level was high and we were able to run up the river quite a ways before turning around. As you can see in some of the pictures the Highway 12 bridge high above us and even a Bald Eagle was enjoying the sights.
With the "grotto" now behind us, stomachs began to rumble and we headed for the resort for another wonderful potluck outside of Dennis and Barbara Huffmans' motorhome. What a very nice time it was enjoying food and boats with such good friends. Diane, I ate so many of your delicious swedish meatballs that I gave myself the "meat sweats".
We ended our day late with a little fishing competition which I believe we won but I'm sure Kent and Diane might disagree.
We want to thank everyone for such a wonderful time. This really was a day with good boats and GREAT friends!!!
