Hi all,
The postponement of the Willamette River cruise and the "replacement" event has been discussed in the Events Discussion forum, but I wanted to post this here to make sure everyone got the word.
It turns out that our timing for the Willamette was not good, so it has been postponed until mid-July. Since some of us (OK, McSon and I ...) really had our hearts set on a road trip in a southerly direction, we're organizing a cruise on the Columbia on May 21st.
Brendan and I will be camping at Beacon Rock State park (35 miles east of Vancouver on the WA side) Friday and Saturday nights. If you'd like to come but would rather not camp, there are several places nearby where you can find affordable lodging. If you'd like to sleep on your boat, overnight moorage is available at the Beacon Rock launch. The launch and the park are on opposite sides of the highway about 2 miles apart.
The river can get rough if the wind kicks up, but the wind forecast looks good for Friday and Saturday. If the water gets rough the recommended strategy for smaller boats is to hug the shoreline where the water is calmer.
The plan for Saturday the 21st is to launch at 10:00 am and cruise upriver to the locks at Bonneville Dam. Recreational boats are allowed to lock through every 3 hours beginning at 9 am, so we'll have lots of time to leisurely cruise the approximately 3.5 to 4 miles from Beacon Rock to the locks. We need to arrive at the locks and announce ourselves 30 minutes prior to our lock-through time. After transiting the locks we'll cruise upriver and see the sights, including a stop at the marina at Cascade Locks. We'll plan on returning through the locks at 3:00, if we don't make that schedule we'll still have plenty of light to make the 6:00 lock-through.
So, it looks like a good weather forecast, beautiful scenery, moderately tolerable company, who's up for it?
